Roll to Dodge! Reroll
Mon Jan 13, 2020 12:01 am
First topic message reminder :
- Prologue:
- You wake to the sound of a resounding THWACK! on your forehead. Half-feeling the spot of impact for bruising and half-patting the area around you to see what it was that hit you, you begin to realize that you're feeling soft grass underneath you. You take a look around - for some reason or another, you've awoken in the middle of a city park, one that you don't remember visiting for quite a while. There are several others around you, having apparently found themselves in the same predicament, but otherwise, it is eerily quiet for a bright and sunny afternoon - no children riding bikes, no dogs prancing about, no friends playing soccer or volleyball.
Eventually, your hand finds a particular piece of plastic: an icosahedron, the corners slightly rounded due to wear, each number labeled with a number in a bright color. There's also a note, written in crumpled paper in rushed handwriting, just underneath the object: "Time to play a game. It's up to you what you make of this power."
What could all of this be leading to...
ROLL TO DODGE: REROLL
The wacky, infinite game of praying for a natural 20 one more time
The wacky, infinite game of praying for a natural 20 one more time
- Intro and Game Rules:
- Welcome to Roll to Dodge, a traditional forum game where you attempt to achieve victory over all other players using nothing but your luck, your cunning and your limitless imagination! Please view the basic rules below - though, if you've seen any amount of Roll to Dodge being played in the past, you likely won't need to refresh yourself.
Play is divided into turns, where each player submits an action for that turn. There is no limit to what you would like to do for your action. This is where Roll to Dodge shines, as a platform for all sorts of chaos, crazy concoctions and wanton nonsense. Take advantage of this to be or do whatever you'd like - the actual implementation of your actions, however, will be left to the fate of your dice.
Each player starts with a 20-sided dice. Whenever they take an action, their dice will be rolled. This is what determines whether the action succeeds or not, as well as what side-effects may occur. The higher the number, the better the results for the actor, with 11 or higher generally being the benchmark for the most basic of successes, and the roll of 20 (a critical success) giving the most prized results. This goes the other way as well; a roll of 1 (a critical failure) will lead to an especially poor result.
When you come under attack (say, by another player), you will also roll you dice to see if you can dodge the consequences of that attack. The higher you roll, the more lessened the effects you suffer.
By default, the current goal of the game is to eliminate all other players by setting their HP from 1000 to 0, while avoiding the same fate. May you be the last one standing!

- Rahim frowned at the failed reaction, looking at the die in his hand. On a typical day he'd expect a stunt like that to work... did this thing make his actions worse? That could be an issue.
"Well thankfully, my intention there wasn't to win anyone over," he smiled at the muscle-bound man. "It was just to make a nice distraction so my buddy could sneak up behind you."
Immediately, Rahim turned on his heel and made a run for it, darting into a nearby alley and jumping over a dumpster blocking a side-path. It was fortunate he knew the streets around her well... hmm... but what to do now? That stunt would probably make any attempts at stirring up the populous fall on deaf ears, but perhaps... ah, of course. Those other people in the park: they might know more about what's going on, and maybe even make decent allies.
But who to pursue... some of them started attacking and pulling out weapons from the get-go, so he didn't like his odds there... that scaly thing sounded like the sort of people he tried to avoid...
...Ah. Perfect.
>Rahim: Evade the muscle-bound man and escape through the alleys. Make your way over to Taiko and the library. Perhaps grab some useful tools/weapons along the way, but make sure they're concealed before entering.

- Spoiler:
- Alright, the die didn't seem to do anything. Dolly wasn't sure whether to be relieved or disappointed, but ultimately settled on the former; anything too random could easily become disastrous, and she had never been a gambling woman.
Not unless the stakes were damned high.
At least she had her machete, in any case; couldn't go wrong there. People didn't call her "Cutter" for nothing, eh? Nothing else, granted, but in some ways that made things easier; when all one has was a big fuckin' knife...
Still, she probably wouldn't be able to figure much more out from here. She could come back at some point, maybe set up some traps, but she would need some more equipment for that. If she could get her hands on some copper wiring, she could try weaving an electric rune or something, maybe? Her magical skillset was more utility than power oriented, which meant that a certain degree of setup would need to take place if she was going to use it to deliver any knockout blows. Certainly, luring the others into a trap seemed like a better idea than hunting them down one by one.
The degree of removal might relieve her conscience some, too.
Ugh. Gotta get outta here.
She needed a quick way to get an idea of what was going on in the city. A news station? On a radio. That might work. Cars have radios. Cars are all over the place.
Find one you can hotwire. Should be easy enough if it's mundane; some runes to redirect a few circuits, and...
She didn't enjoy playing the part of the criminal. Not in the least. She didn't much care for the law, either, but just taking things didn't sit well with her. Unfortunately, sitting around and letting people kill each other off without even trying to stop it would sit worse.
>Cutter: Survey the area from your window to find an unoccupied car that might be easily stolen and which contains a radio and/or other useful items.

CORRECTION 2020-02-09 10:19 EST: Removed incorrectly applied -2 modifier to Rahim's roll. He no longer receives Overexerted status.
Reef Livonia
Action: Close in on Sock and take your dice back, using your hands.
Roll: 20 CRITICAL!!
As you furiously close the distance on Sock, you see that he's opted to drop your dice down his throat. Something snaps inside of you: the fact, the mere idea that he thinks he can hide that dice of yours away in his stomach, make a mockery of you...
It makes something inside of your churn with pure rage.
Without further hesitation, you lunge forward with your hand, fingers pointed forward like a blade... and with a sudden, unnatural burst of strength in your hands, you plunge your hand directly into Sock's gut! You then clench that hand into a fist, and messily tear your dice out of Sock's body! Sock suffers 400 damage from your brutality, and with No Digestion due to the hole you tore in his stomach, he won't even be able to take painkillers for it!
You got your dice back, and with it a feral sense of wanton violence. You have gained the Mauling Hands still, allowing your unarmed attacks to messily tear through opponents and deal crippling damage. A surge of feral adrenaline surges through you!
A sudden feeling of restoration comes to you as you pocket your dice, though your maximum HP doesn't go back to normal.
Klemence P. Kalamazoo
Action: Engage super-speed and run over to the Shopping District.
Roll: 17
You start off with a slight jog, before ramping towards a brisk run, then a furious sprint... and before you know it, your feet begin whirling at speeds you didn't know were possible! You're a barely-noticeable blur as you make a beeline through the streets of the metropolis, hitting the brakes at just the right moment to skid your way right in the middle of the bustling Shopping District! There's so many shops here, selling all sorts of goods: hiking and climbing gear, vaguely dangerous power tools, fashionable outfits, musical instruments... you name it, somebody's selling it!
You look down at your feet see them glowing a reverent color of teal-colored light. Just now, what you just did... was this some sort of blessing granted to you by a benevolent spirit? You now bear the Zephyrfoot's Blessing, giving you improved agility with your feet!
Taiko
Action: Read the crossed-out names on the chat. While you're at it, do some idle research on how to peacefully dismantle tense situations.
Roll: 19 (17 +2)
Well, since you're here, you might as well look at all the names, actually...
Given the name of the web chat, this is probably the list of everyone who has -- or had -- a dice. People who got yanked into this whole game of keeping your dice protected... players, like you. And it looks like there's 16 of them... though there apparently were 20 at some point. You take your time to memorize all of these; your newfound Player Knowledge should come in handy for recognizing any of these people later, such as if you were to hear any of these names in passing.
You then type into a search engine "how to handle tense situations." Turns out, there's a LOT of information about this, various web blog posts and academic articles about lightening the mood and keeping your head above the water. Time passes by quickly as you look through everything you can, but by the time you're done, you feel like you can do some work as an Amateur Therapist.
Cymbal: yeah, it's really really freaky!
Cymbal: i'm pretty good with computers so
Cymbal: maybe i can figure out what's going on?
Cymbal: or at least find who set up this chat
While you're reading Cymbal's latest messages, you can see from your seat a couple of particularly buff men in black leather jackets gather at the library's front doors. They don't seem to be blocking the entrance as you see several patrons leave the building uneventfully, so maybe it's not anything important.
Rahim
Action: Evade the muscle-bound man and escape through the alleys. Make your way over to Taiko and the library. Perhaps grab some useful tools/weapons along the way, but make sure they're concealed before entering.
Roll: 8
"Ha! Ya really think I'm dumb enough to fall for that!?" The Black Jack Crew grunt clearly wasn't convinced by your distraction and instead immediately gives chase! You sprint as far as you can into the alleyways, but with the muscular menace at your tail, you have no time to catch your breath or pick up anything useful!
Miraculously, you manage to lose your pursuer, though you have to take a bit to catch you breath. You look up to see the humble city library - but your luck takes a turn for the worse again, as you can see two members of the Black Jack Crew blocking the way to the library's entrance! They're looking to get a piece of you, without a doubt... That guy that was chasing you earlier must have told all of his friends to go after you. You probably won't able to just enter the library without get through or around them.
Dolly Cutter
Action: Survey the area from your window to find an unoccupied car that might be easily stolen and which contains a radio and/or other useful items.
Roll: 5 (4 +1)
You leave your office and identify an unoccupied beige sedan on the side of the street. There's a little bit of rust gathering on the bumpers, and the leather seats inside have been baking in direct sunlight for years... there's no way anybody's using this car, right?
You take a look around you to see if anybody could spot you, and seeing that the coast looks clear, you get to work picking the car lock--
"Hey, you. Yeah, you, in front of my car."
You turn around to see a lanky-looking figure dressed in plaid and denim overalls, carrying a very heavy toolbox that looks like it must have been painted red once. There's something awkward about this man's gait, like a scarecrow forced itself to walk for the first time in years. You get a sudden feeling of danger.
"So. What exactly, are you're doing?" he rasps, the toolbox jerking around in his hand a few times. You can hear the rattle of heavy metal objects in the box, each one somehow ringing with a threatening tone, like an rattlesnake's warning.
You have the feeling he won't let you slip by so easily.
Sock
Action: swallow Reef’s die in an attempt to make something magical happen
Roll: 4
You try to shove the bright marble of light that was Reef's die down your throat... only to be met by sensation of searing heat! You manage to swallow, but you still take 100 damage as the dice burns your esophagus on the way down. Man, you could really go for a glass of water--
Suddenly, Reef plunges his hand straight into your gut like some crazed barbarian, with such power that you couldn't roll to dodge even if you had your dice! You can only scream in pain as he reaches into your stomach and rips his own die right out of your body, and with it the rest of your digestive system! You take a whopping 400 damage and with No Digestion any more, you won't be able to even have that drink of water you were just thinking about! The pain, the horror!
Going for longer without your own die causes more of your life to sap away! Your current and maximum HP drop by 100!
Another ripple surges across the canopy above the city, turning it a distinct shade of violet.
Taiko

- "Awrite, actual stores! Good thing this ain't a small town with like, a single supermarket or somethin', that woulda been inconvenient."
Klemence fiddled with his phone a bit as he walked towards two shops in particular. Let's see, where did I put- ah, there's the Wallet app! I hope they take Banana Pay here, I don't think I have my actual cards on me.
Shame I can't just steal everything, but I think I see police over there.
And stealing from people who don't deserve it is wrong, I guess. Stupid moral compass...

- Prose:
- Dolly cringed a little, internally; she was usually better than this. That anyone could sneak up on her... this guy probably wasn't normal.
Instincts flaring, she sizes the man up. He definitely seemed dangerous, although it was difficult to pinpoint the exact reasons. A [menacing] charm? Hard to say; usually, she had a better sense for those sorts of things, but... she was clearly off her game.
No, surrendering to that kind of thinking was the first step to losing. If a fight could be avoided, she would do her best to do so, but appearing too submissive could be just as much of a mistake as undue aggression. She had to remember that he hadn't opened up by clocking her in the back of the head.
"My apologies," she says, wary. She keeps her tone clipped, professional; not the sort of heavily-accented, colloquial language she used in her day-to-day. "I've got reason to believe lives are in danger. I was attempting to gain access to this vehicle so that I could use its radio, figure out what's going on." Was this believable? It was the truth, but... "Have you noticed the sky rippling? I'm attempting to investigate the cause, but I don't have access to most of my equipment as of right now."
She manages to look bashful.
"It's... not really an excuse for attempted breaking and entering, but I genuinely believe people are in life-threatening danger... I can't afford to wait around politely. If you understand, then I hope you'll forgive me."
>Dolly: Attempt to apologize and de-escalate; get this stranger on your side, if possible.

TURN 4
Reef Livonia
Action: Punch Sock in the solar plexus and attempt to break his lungs.
Roll: 7
Just as you close the distance on Sock, he attempts to take back his dice! Roll to dodge!
Dodge Roll: 13
Try as you might, you couldn't keep Sock's prying fingers away! He manages to take his dice back.
You throw a nasty blow at Sock's midsection, taking advantage of his inability to roll to dodge! But your punch goes wide and only grazes the side of his arm, dealing 20 damage.
All of a sudden, you're blindsided by an arm wrapping around your head from behind, then throwing you down onto the ground for 100 damage! You take a split second to catch your breath before rolling onto your back to see your new assailant: a bald man, with a mask of ivy leaves that cover his entire face, and robes that look like a bushel of cotton bolls plucked off the plant and directly sewn together.
He raises his fists in a clearly practiced stance at you. "You bring grievous harm to innocents. That cannot be tolerated." You feel like you're up against a formidable opponent...
Klemence P. Kalamazoo
Action: Use your smartphone's wallet functionality to purchase a conductor's baton and a grappling hook.
Roll: 10 (8 +2)
You have no issue buying yourself a new Conductor's Baton for conducting music, but when you head over to a sports goods store to pick yourself up some specialty climbing gear, you're met with a disappointed salesperson who said that they were just sold out on their best grappling hooks.
The salesperson points out the beige coattails of a figure just leaving the front doors of the storefront - sounds like this person beat you to the punch. You end up purchasing a Flimsy Grappling Hook that's too cheaply made to last more than one use. They don't make these like they used to...
Rahim
Action: Attempt to find a back entrance or other alternate route into the library.
Roll: 12
You eventually locate an open window on the side of the library and promptly hoist yourself through it. As you do so, you hear some shouting, the deep pitch of the voice clearly from those Black Jack Crew thugs that have been looking for you - darn it! Looks like they saw you sneak your way in, and now they know you're in the library!
You're in the Library now and won't have issues using its facilities, if you don't count the Black Jack Crew hunting you down. You can see them barging through the entrance of the library now... they're going to try and ransack the whole building to look for you, no doubt. They're not blocking the front door anymore at least, so maybe you can slip out through there if need be?
Taiko
Action: Open up a Mu-Fundme for Magical Boy T.KO to begin acquiring a steady income.
Roll: 4
As you open up Mu-Fundme in another browser window, you suddenly hear a loud cough behind you. You turn around to see an elderly librarian, wearing a pink turtleneck, glaring hot fire pokers at you. She points to a poster on the wall, clearing stating that library computers are not to be used for any monetary gain.
It doesn't take long for her to summarily hand you a ban from the Library and point you towards the doors, as you're forced to log out of the Dice-Holder Web Chat and go outside. On your way there, though, several mean-looking muscular thugs in black jackets barge into you and push you over, and one of them even steps on you to inflict 100 damage to you! What gives!?
Dolly Cutter
Action: Attempt to apologize and de-escalate; get this stranger on your side, if possible.
Roll: 4
The figure jerks its head around irregularly a few times, resounding cracking sounds with each movement. Eventually, his jaw opens, bearing teeth like a rabid chimpanzee's.
"No. You touched it. It's mine."
He opens his palm, revealing a small prism of tarnished silver in his hand, slowly rotating-- you blink. No, it's not a prism: it's a twenty-sided dice. Just now, against your attempt to placate him... did he roll to dodge?!
"The things nobody has, I have. I'm using what nobody is using." His jaw snaps back in place, and his toolbox rattles. "My name, yeah, also not used. It is Twyvil. Hello. I give my name to you, now I must take back."
Twyvil suddenly swings his toolbox at your head! Roll to dodge!
Dodge Roll: 18
You step to the side easily as you hear the telltale sounds of the toolbox breaking the car windows into small glass shards.
You suddenly feel a sense of outrage from Twyvil, as he growls like a starving hyena! You should do what you can to not be hit by his attacks!
Sock
Action: Retrieve your d20 and flee the area
Roll: 16
You charge at Reef and try to get you dice back! He rolls to dodge but can't evade your hands as you finally get back your dice! The oppressive feeling of death you've been feeling finally goes away, though your health doesn't improve.
Reef tries to retaliate with a blow to your solar plexus, but his shot goes wide and only grazes you! It still stings for 20 damage, though.
All of a sudden, you see a bald man in oddly puffy white robes and leaves covering his face grab Reef from behind and throw him to the ground! You take the chance to skedaddle, eventually making your way to a Calming Pond a small distance away from the commotion. Though you can still see and hear what's going on over there if you focus hard enough, the sense of peace you feel just being near these waters... it cools your nerves, and brings you a sense of zen.
Twyvil
Action: I swing my box of tools at this thief of cars.
Roll: 9
You pull your arm back and swing your toolbox right at Cutter's noggin! She rolls to dodge and deftly gets out of the way, causing you to hit the window of the car instead. The glass shatters, revealing the torn leather seats to the rest of the world.
This, combined with Cutter's meaningless attempts at diplomacy, has you feeling very outraged at the current state of the world.

- Jeez...:
- Klemence tentatively poked the hook-end of his newest purchase, wincing at the slight flexibility of the prongs and the bits of metal that flaked off. "Good thing I'm not planning on using this for actual climbing... not sure if I trust it to hold my own weight for more than a second or two. Why the heck did Coattails buy more than one of the decent hooks anyways? What, did those just break slower? You'd think the pricey ones would last you a good while... ah well, spilt milk and all that."
Walking out of the store, he oriented himself towards what looked like the nearest part of the incredibly suspicious dome. Well, that oughta do it for supplies, on to the actual "doing" part of things.
>Klemence: Move over to the closest part of the giant glowing dome thingy covering the city. Poke it a few times and see what happens.

- Reef looked at the man in the funny dress. Who does he think he is? This is the 21st century, not the French and Indian War.
"No one here is an innocent." Reef scoffed. "This game is kill or be killed. If you don't understand that, I'll make you."
Reef: Beat the crap out of your assailant in the ivy mask.

- Uuuu....:
Sniffling, Taiko finishes rubbing the back of his sleeve under his nose. He really didn't understand why there was a rule against using the computer to get some money, but he didn't mean to cause any trouble... maybe he should have apologized before wandering out...
--when he looks back up, however, he suddenly finds himself shoved to the side: then a heavy shoe drops into his stomach, knocking out all the wind from his lungs!
In this moment, he can't even find it in himself to be mad. Call it karma he wound up like this for trying something so terrible... He was still at least a little terrified, too, somewhere in the back of his mind, he felt that familiar contempt flare up again. It gave the dice still safely clasped in his hands an even more palpable weight than ever.
All these emotions are a little overwhelming--but even still, he he didn't... he didn't want to give in to the impulse yet. But maybe he ought to face the music and make himself a little less of a punching bag...
>Taiko: Locate something to defend self with outside-- in particular, a pair of heavy, short sticks to be wielded in both hands; if possible, find a long stick as well.

- Where'd that kid go?:
- As Rahim pulled himself into the library, he knew he'd need to act quickly. Unfortunately, a quick look around told him what he feared: that kid he'd tried to follow earlier was nowhere to be seen. Hmmm... but why would he have even come here?
A few seconds later, the man notices something odd on one of the library's computers: an open browser, hovering over what appears to be a logged-out web chat. Curious... hearing the sound of his assailants barging in, he pops open an extra browser tab beside the chat, searching something quickly...
> Rahim: Investigate the Dice-Holder Web Chat. Try to learn anything useful you can about it and any information it contains. If time allows, pull up a quick computer search for any useful info on the Black Jack Crew that could get them off his tail.

- Buck wild as he may be, the entity known as Sock knew when he was beat. It was like three or four posts ago.
Just for a moment, he stopped to think. Perhaps the drum child might be a good conduit to grow his power? But that could come later.
"Looking back, I probably should have done this sooner."
He sticks his head into the pond.
>Sock: Absorb the pond's energy to heal yourself. Corrupt it into a chaotic area.

- Oh, jeez, okay then.
A peaceful solution definitely wasn't viable here. Was that the compulsion talking? Maybe, but sometimes the compulsion is right, right? Sure, this dude had a die, which meant he had to be eliminated... but if he wasn't outright swinging at her, and he wasn't clearly... unstable, she thought she'd probably be able to have a reasonable conversation, at least. Maybe even ally, temporarily.
But nah. It was Violence Time.
Steadying her stance, she prepared for Twyvil to swing again - when he did, she would avoid it and counterswing her machete so that it would chop off the hand holding the toolbox, using his own momentum to increase the force with which blade and wrist would meet.
>Cutter: Prepare to counterattack his next swing by dodging and chopping off the hand holding his toolbox, disarming and un-handing him in one smooth motion.
