Intermission: The Town of Vernia
Sat Jul 13, 2019 2:30 pm
"Aaaaaalright, here we are kids," Scarlett calls, pulling the rental bus to a halt. You feel thankful she managed to drive here without incident, given how exhausted she looks.
Once outside, you drink in the beautiful view of the town: it's situated right up against the mountains, all its roads and paths at inclines. You see people going about their morning business, heading to work and out at small cafes eating breakfast. Grass and trees dot the areas between buildings, lush evergreen in the fairly cold climate of the city.
"Your pamphlets should tell you about some of the suggested locations around here. The hotel we wrote down has rooms ready for you guys if you'd rather stay here for the week than take the bus back to the castle." She hops out with a sniffle, a member of the Logistics Division stepping up to take the bus back for the next round of troops. "Buses heading back start at 8 pm and stop at 9, so don't be late. Most of the commanders will be at the castle this week, I'll be poking around for info here." She gives a sloppy salute, "good work n' all that nice shit," before sauntering off.

- Activities in Vernia:
- All players may pick one 'primary' activity to partake in while in Vernia. This will give you a buff for the start of the next battle. You may choose to have your character visit other activity locations as well, but you can only receive one buff.
Though not required, feel free to roleplay your character engaging with these locations -- if possible, I'll try to have NPCs or castle commanders be around as well to share some conversation with.
Activity One: Gelene's Hotel, Bar and Spa - Besides being the hotel you may stay at while in Vernia, Gelene's hosts an extensive spa, featuring facials, hot tubs, pools, manicures, herbal baths, and more. It also has an active club scene in the evenings, a gourmet buffet at dinner time, and an open bar at all times of the day.
Buff Awarded: Renewed and Reinvigorated - Your character spends most of the week relaxing and being waited on. In the next battle, they'll start with an extra 200 Temporary HP!
Activity Two: Roarin' Ralio's Recreation - Featuring fishing in the nearby river, wrestling, hill-sledding, every sport with the word 'ball' in it (and a couple that don't), go-kart races, "Magician's Royale" (think paintball but with magic wands) and golf courses (both in standard and 'mini' variety), Roarin' Ralio's is your one-stop place for exercise and physical fun.
Buff Awarded: Powered Up! - Your character spends most of the week participating in games and being active. In the next battle, they'll have an additional +10 power for the first two turns!
Activity Three: The Vernia Public Library and Archive - Nestled in the town's center is its three-floor library, filled with works of fiction from across the world and reference material on any topic one could hope for. With the good will from defeating Dragonskull Colosseum, Castle High members have been given permission to look at the archives of the library as well, containing information on more 'volatile' topics such as theoretical magic-craft and history/lore that's more difficult to come by. Featuring a huge number of comfortable chairs, video recordings of a wide array of operas, plays, musicals and movies, audio books, and some of the nicest librarians found anywhere, the Vernia Public Library is a wonderful place for those who enjoy personal time and stories.
Buff Awarded: Sharpened Mind - Your character spends most of the week reading and digesting stories and information. In the next battle, your newest Training Mission starts out with 1 action completion already!
- Shopping in Vernia:
- While vacationing, your character runs across a piece of equipment and a piece of crafting material that really speak to them. What are they?
Every player may describe 1 weapon, armor, or specialty armor of their choice, and their character will come across something for sale in Vernia that comes close to matching that description. Every player may also describe 1 piece of crafting material they are interested in, and their character will come across that as well. This means in total, each player will find 2 items. These will be immediately placed in that player's inventory, though they are free to put them in the Treasury or give them to other players if they wish.
Please note: these items will be of similar power-level to the items retrieved from Dragonskull Colosseum (ie, around Level 11), no matter what you describe them as.
Example:
Specialty Armor: A red bandanna full of fighting spirit
Crafting Material: A chunk of magnetic metal
Deadline for Activity and Item Choices: 7/ 20/19

Erika stepped off the bus, looking noticeably happier to be in this town than staying in the castle. A quick glance at the pamphlet showed her exactly what she was looking for and she closed it quickly. She grinned, placing her guitar on her back and looking around the group. "I think I'll be getting a good seat at the bar before it gets too crowded. I'm open to anyone coming with if they want," a pause and a smirk, "but, uh... you're buying!" She laughed, a sound that seemed like it was trying too hard to be a cackle, hiding a higher pitched giggle underneath. "Hah, we all got paid, y'all know I'm kidding." She started walking down toward the hotel, idly musing out loud. "Wonder if they'd let me play..."

- Unnecessary Prose:
- Standing by a pine tree, drinking in the view...Hoping that the memory, will leave her spirit soon.
Along this path and way she walks, feet beating on the street, while images and words are running deep.
She has too much pride to call out to her new friends, so quietly she walks, as if asleep.
She stares at the distance and tries not to think. She pictures the chain she's been trying to break again.
But the feeling won't go.
And fire won't burn up her memories, and ashes can't answer her pain.
Lord give her the power to take breath in this breeze...give life to this scared running dame.
=================
As Severa exits the bus, she stares ahead, eyes blank as her thoughts race and her memories hound her. Moving forward slowly, step by measured step, it's clear something is bothering her, but she says nothing.
As she crosses a walkway, her cotton-candy blue hair seems to deflate a little, then grays, losing color. Lines form around her eyes, as if her tired soul was manifesting physically on her body.
How long had she been alive, again? Even she didn't know. Green eyes like the bottoms of bottles echoed the empty alleyway she was passing through, almost lifeless in their shade. Her robes, usually a ferocious shade of forest green and sharpest black, seemed to bleed together as mottled vines, pattering along her form.
Sitting now, resting against a wall, she sighed without knowing, and looked to the skies far above. Flickers of life came back to her, and the changes slowly began to recede - wrinkles tightened and tautened, eyes began to brighten, and robes took solid form once more. The proud Tabard she was wearing, though faded, seemed full of pride once again.
She was a long way from home.

Bran smiles. "That's great, Erika! Personally, though, I'm not a drinker. My idea of kicking back is some quiet time by myself, not a glass of wine and some small talk." He says. He seems to stop after seeing Severa, frowning a bit, but then he sighs and turns away. She probably doesn't want to be bothered.
"I'm going to stop by the library. I know, seems like more work, but I'm a scholar. That's what's fun for me." That said, he walked off in a different direction from Erika, towards the library. Maybe he'd stop and talk to someone there, but either way he was more interested in the books there than the conversation. It was a quiet place, after all.

Location: Gelene's Hotel, Bar and Spa
As anyone entered the hotel, they would be greeted by a pleasant, glowing atmosphere. Travelers from all over stayed in the hotel and were now milling about, engaging in pleasant conversation with several other members of the castle's forces. The bar was just opened, the club is getting set up, the restaurant is open for business... and curiously, Rosemary, the castle's head medic, is busying about, asking a large number of people some question, an anxious look on her face.
Location: The Vernia Public Library and Archive
The smell of the library was one of printer ink and binding glue, as gentle light filtered in from a number of windows. There weren't too many people in at the moment, though librarians were moving about, organizing new arrivals and filing away returns. Hunched over at one of the tables is Scarlett, head of recon, wearing more casual wear than she's usually seen in. She yawns as she pours through what seem to be seven or eight different books and journals, her eyes quickly scanning through the material written within, searching.

Curious, Bran walks up to Scarlett. "Sorry to bother you. It's Bran. I didn't expect to see you here." Bran says. "If you don't want to talk, that's fine. I'll leave you alone. But I didn't know you were a reader. Is what you're reading for work, or is there a reason that you're in more casual wear?" He smiles.
- OOC:
- Could you describe what Scarlett is wearing in a bit more detail? I'm not sure exactly how casual her outfit is.

Scarlett looks up with a scowl, expecting to tell off some nosy local -- then her expression softens, seeing the mage. "Oh, hey Bran." Instead of her usual tight, sleeveless leather uniform, she's wearing a simple pair of brown trousers and a red wool sweater. The sleeves of the sweater are slightly long, causing her hands to hide away inside them whenever she isn't flipping book pages. Scarlett rubs one of her eyes as she looks back over the mess she's made, "Ugh, I wish this wasn't for work. The first library we've stopped at in the entire time I've been in this castle, and I'm still stuck doing research." She sighs, leaning her head on her hand, "I'd kill to just grab a half-dozen murder mystery books and read in 'til my stomach hurts, just leave all this shit behind for a couple hours. But a girl's work is never done, it seems: gotta take advantage of having all this info in the same place while I can. It's great. Now I get to spend all day reading hastily written witness testimonies and guard reports written by illiterates."
She closes up the book on her lap, leaning back and looking up. "The worst part is, the more I learn about this Flying Bullshit Fortress, the less I know what the hell's going on. The oldest reports I can conclusively attach to it only go back a little while, which would imply it just got active recently. Which makes no fucking sense. That thing must be using magic similar to Castle High's, but the magic our castle uses is A., one-of-a-kind, and B., dates back to the splitting of Castle High and Castle Low, which... must have happened a long ass time ago. I've got some leads on locations it might have a connection to, but they're all ancient as hell -- what, did some stupid kids wander into some ruins and flick a switch or something?" Her voice begins to raise, "Why now, and not before? And how have I never heard about this Fortress until right now, despite having agents--"
A passing librarian gives Scarlett a silent, meaningful look, and she shrinks back, obvious embarrassment as she whispers, "right, sorry, sorry," dropping her volume several levels. She looks down at her lap, sighing again, before suddenly looking back up at Bran, "Oh, sorry, didn't mean to talk your ear off or anything. Guess it just gets kinda pent up. Gotta look tough and collected when I'm back at the castle, y'know? If people saw me upset or frustrated about this stuff, they might think I don't know what I'm doing or something." She smiles at him in kind -- it's surprisingly genuine and positive, considering how rarely you've ever seen one from her. "I'm sure you came here to get away from work, not hear me ramble about it, right? Made a good choice coming here, this place just oozes peace and quiet." She re-opens the notebook on her lap, "I don't mind you being here or anything, if you'd like to sit here too," she motions with her head toward a seat nearby. "Heh, Russel always tells me I should be more hospitable."

When Scarlett begins speaking, Bran is clearly a little startled by her tone of voice, but not uninterested. Once she quiets down, he lets off a slight chuckle. "Figures. Not many people are too happy about having to work off the clock. If it helps, I've got the feeling that I haven't been able to do enough research as of late. I'd love to take over for you, if that's possible. That way you can focus on other things." He finds a seat nearby and sits down. "Either way, I'd love to help. Crazy, I know."
Maybe we should switch jobs... Bran thinks to himself as he smiles. It's a slightly awkward smile, but a genuine one. It's nice to see her kicking back a little.
"I'll definitely keep quiet about this. I get that others want Scarlett the Invincible, and honestly, I can see why. So much rests on your shoulders..." He sighs. "It must be hard. I suppose that's part of why I'm offering help. A little selfish of me, but still."
I hope that she's not so stubborn that she'll refuse.

Standing slowly, Severa began walking again. With her eyes now clear, she wandered the streets, eyeing flyers and storefronts as she passed. Suddenly, an emblazoned plaque caught her eye - "The Moderne Witche's Shoppe". Maybe it was the overuse of the letter "e", but it drew her attention - and her winding path - first to its doorway, and then through it.
The first thing you'd notice was the noise. On the busy street there's no way you'd hear it, but inside what looked like hundreds of potions bubbled and hissed in colorful bottles along the walls. An enchanted broom was sweeping away in one of the corners, kicking up a cloud of dust, and right next to it...An unattended counter, with a small silver bell set on it. Walking nervously, slowly, Severa reached to tap the bell, only to have it ring before her hand made contact, causing her to jump.
"Er, sorry, sorry - hello, sorry...um...is anyone here? I was, just wondering...do you sell robes?"
She felt silly talking to thin air, but something about the place really compelled her.
"A-and, perhaps...might you have any magic conduits for sale? I'm looking to repair something..."

- Response to Severa:
- "I've got anything you could think of, cutie!" came a voice from behind Severa -- when she turned around, she'd see a large, robed woman with long, silver hair, smiling playfully. Her robes shimmered with all the colors of her potions and more, enchanted rises and falls of fabric that made her seem almost ethereal. On her head sat a classic wizard's hat, a patchwork face stitched into its front with button eyes.
She took a step closer to Severa, a giggle playing off her smiling face, "You say you'd like a robe and a magical conduit? Hmm..." she puts a hand to her chin and squints at Severa. "You don't quite strike me as one of those boring mages, though, I certainly can't sell you something bulky and stuffy. Ah!" she claps, "I think I've got just the thing!" She leaps back over the counter and a few seconds later, reveals her find: a set of sleek, light-blue robes with green fringes. She smiles proudly as she lays it out on the counter, "These are called Robes of Motif! They have a wonderful little enchantment to them that causes mana to flow into you from your surroundings, like the sea inviting many rivers. Such elegance, mm?"
"There's something I like about you, so tell you what: the robes are yours, along with this Crystal Conduit--" she reveals a glimmering gem from her robe sleeve, placing it on top of the robe, "--for... oh, let's say, 1000 coins? Have to keep the landlords at bay after all," she laughs.
>Location: Library
Scarlett's eyes widen as she hears Bran's response. "You serious about that? You'd be willing to take over for me?" She takes a moment to look over her shoulder, checking that there aren't any other commanders around, before turning back to him. "That would be amazing of you. If I asked anyone in recon to do it, word would spread about me slacking on the job, but since you're in Combat... shit, this could work!" A joyful smile spreads across her face as the realization hits her. "I could actually read something fun, hell yes! Thanks a lot, Bran. And yeah, the work... I try not to let anyone notice, but it really wears on me sometimes. I mean, I didn't sign up for this job myself. Gotta be honest, once or twice, I think I might've just... left, if it wasn't for Russel. No way I could leave him behind to deal with all this. So... I do what I gotta do, y'know?"
She looks back at the mage with a slightly more serious look, "alright, if you're doing the researching, it's gotta be good quality, alright?" She takes a piece of paper off the table in front of her, pointing to various names and circled words as she speaks, "these are the names of civilizations that have records of magical feats that could mean they could approach Castle High's magical complexity. This part here is a translation guide -- depending on what region you're reading a book from, they all have different names. If you find the name of a location, make sure to cross-check it with at least one other source before trying to find its position on a modern map. Even if some information is inconsistent, keep track of it, there's usually some truth in rumors and myths. And if--" she yawns once more, putting a hand over her mouth, before continuing "--if you have any questions or need any help, just give me a tap."
She reaches under her chair, revealing she'd already found a novel that interested her. Her eyes scan its cover with glee, but she manages to pull them away to look at Bran, searching his eyes for clear understanding. "All that make sense?"
---------------------------------------------
>Location: Hotel
Rosemary immediately approaches Vince as he gets close. She's wearing her usual coat and dress, though her scarf is wound around of her hands, where she appears to be nervously fiddling with it. "Oh, Vince, hello. Actually, you might be able to help me. I need to ask you an important question." She seems to hesitate a moment, as if weighing how best to speak. "Um... well... you've been here at Castle High for a while now. You've gotten to see some different places, areas we've traveled to..."
"...Vince, do you remember anything at all about how you ended up in Castle High? I know I asked you when you first came, but... has anything jogged your memory? Are you sure you never heard of the castle before you came here?"

Bran smiles as Scarlett accepts his proposal. As she finishes giving him instructions, he nods. "Of course it makes sense. This is my job. I'm well aware that there's often truth to myths and fairy tales. As time erodes away our memory, they're often our only source when it comes to history. Not only that, but they often had roots in the politics of the era. That's part of why they tend to be inaccurate. The perceptions of the people who told those stories colored our recollections." Bran explains. "As a result, I do this sort of cross-checking on a regular basis. It's necessary to check multiple sources so that you have a bigger picture of what happened." Once he's done talking, he chuckles. "Oh, but I'm rambling. Thank you for the lead. Let me try and see what places I can find with magic as complex as Castle High's." As Scarlett picks up a novel, he reaches out his hand for one of the books Scarlett was reading.
"I'm not sure I'll need any help, but if I do, I'll be sure to tap you on the shoulder, just as you asked."

"Have to keep the landlords at bay, after all!"
Said with a jingling laugh, something about this woman resonated with Severa. However, as her gaze fell upon the Crystal Conduit, her eyes widened and she gasped.
"Dear Ragnus...Crystal Conduit, indeed - that's a Photon Refractor if ever I've seen one! I won't pay less than 6000 for it, fair shopkeep - six thousand, and not a coin below!"
Drawing her purse of coins from her waist, Severa quickly poured out roughly half her earnings on to the counter next to the silver bell.
"And those robes - I've never heard of such power...I believe another 1500 is in order for those alone, if you'd kindly accept!"
Pouring another generous helping of coinage on to the counter, Severa felt an oddness in her chest. Was she being enchanted? Aim low, score high? But no - she was a Cleric now. She had no use of money. With that in mind...
"My lady...in all truthfulness, I am a woman of the cloth."
She turned to face the shopkeep.
"Money has no use to me outside of these rare moments. My coins count twelve thousand in number - and I daresay you need these riches more than I. Landlords are, in my opinion, a blight upon society - and I would see such a wonderful shop as this kept safe for as long as I could."
Gently scraping her coins back in to her purse, Severa extended her arm, holding out the bulging leather to the other woman.
"If 1000 is all you desire, I will agree to your terms - but I believe someone who willingly offers rarities such as these deserves so much more."

- Location:
- After completing his research at the library, Bran traveled through the market in search of items that would be useful for him.
Location: The Moderne Witche's Shoppe
Bran entered the Modern Witches' Shoppe long after Severa exited.
"Hello, there." Bran briefly took a look at the shop's wares, before turning to whoever was keeping shop at the time. "I am looking to create a spellbook for use in conducting magic. For that reason, I'd like enchanted paper. Do you sell that here?" He sighed. "In particular, I would like something that is useful for casting magic of a specific element. I'm a member of Castle High's military, you see, so I frequently make use of magic of that kind. I do not have any element in particular in mind, but I would prefer an element other than water or fire. I already have a wand that is useful for casting water magic, you see, and one of my allies specializes in fire magic, much to my distress." Chuckling a little bit, he frowned not long afterwards. "I hope that's not too picky."
Location: Old Man Anton's Antiques and Curiosities
After he left the Moderne Witche's Shoppe, Bran turned around the corner and walked for a block or two. Eventually, he found another shop that interested him. It was called "Old Man Anton's Antiques and Curiosities." It seemed to be an antiques store, but it was possible that it also sold magic items. Entering the store, he began to look inside.
"Hello." Once again, Bran took a look at the shop's wares, before turning to the shopkeeper. It seemed that his hunch was right-there were a variety of knick-knacks and other paraphernalia on the shelves, although likely not many magic items. "I'm going to take a look around."
Bran sorted through the store's wares. To his eye, it seemed to be genuine antiques, for the most part-definitely of interest to him, but not what he was looking for when he set out here. Eventually, however, he found a slightly odd-looking pair of spectacles. Bran began to appraise it. It seemed to be glasses that enhance vision beyond normal levels. This was definitely useful for him, as he would be doing some investigative work on his next mission. Smiling, he walked over to the counter. "I would like to buy these."

- Meanwhile...:
Arthur had managed to wander off from the party without- somehow- calling much attention to himself; truthfully, he wasn't in the right mood to go to the bar quite yet, as much as he joked about heading there to cause trouble on the ride to Vernia.
Instead, following the pull of his gut, he took a long, peaceful walk around the town perimeter... There really was no place out there quite as enchanting as the mountains. Vernia was a good few days north from the peaceful valley he'd been living in the past while, but he knew well the crisp air, the light bite of winter chill on his dry skin, the height. Wonderful.
After a while, though, he started to feel the frigid mountain air bite through the last of his natural heat-- he'd only come here in his canvas pants and his last good t-shirt, after all... and while he didn't particularly mind a little cold, there was a difference between enduring it for a few days and living in it. He needed a new jacket, perhaps some nicer shirts for the days off... Ah-- and materials for repairing Saul's sword... perhaps he'd get himself a few personal tools...
After some walking in and out of a few shops, Arthur emerged with one bag full of personal articles... a couple of colored shirts, a pack of white undershirts (with just the fit and structure he preferred; if he was particular about any kind of clothes, it was this), a new flask and enough alcohol to hold him over for the next week or so... A new brown leather jacket, as well, nearly identical to his other one save for the addition of a few more pockets, which he gladly put on as soon as he could to start building up heat again. Though he wasn't one to shop often, he had to acknowledge the contentment of knowing one had all these fresh supplies at the ready.
He'd also gotten himself some supplies for smithing (he was starting to regret leaving all his tools at home in his rush to get out of there... an apron, a new hammer- for metalwork only, gloves...)-- though certainly not one to walk around in a new town with both his hands occupied, he'd rolled them up in the apron he bought and tucked them away carefully in his travel satchel.
Going through the list in his head a few more times, he seemed to have gotten just about everything he needed; one more stop, and he could relax for the day. Between the peaceful edge of a stream down the mountainside, or the lively folk that would surely gather at the bar in the evening, he couldn't decide where to go afterwards just yet-- though he intended fully to... recharge, in the one week he didn't have to spend sharing a bath, restroom, and sleeping quarters with thirty-or-so other people. As best as he could. It wouldn't be bad to meet someone, either...
Finally, he ducked into a building emanating the familiar smoke of a working flame- a humble smith's shop. He'd passed it a few times while searching for his essentials, but now that he had finished with over ten thousand gold remaining, he had a better idea of the amount he could afford to spend.
"Hoy there," he called out, if anyone was there, already drifting towards a display of well-crafted swords on the back wall.
Artfully made, though a little too far on the heavy side for his taste... just slightly. He could manage... Even if he was going to be a little weaker in general with that... what was it? Pulliminary Fiberose-- the... the, lung problem. Whatever.
As he leaned in to look closer at the details on one of their lighter swords, the edge of his lips ticked up into a subtle smile; there was that metal staining technique his apprentice had picked up from that wandering merchant. A pretty teal, like water, flowing down its flat... and he had to appreciate the more humble approach to the detailing on its crossguard: a simple but elegant depiction of a glowing moon.
Arthur himself never had the eye nor the sentiment to make art like that, but some part of him always admired it... someone who could consider any part of a sword as more than just a tool for killing. In his mind, decoration was only a distraction from the most important parts... and he'd long ago cleared out such things to achieve his style. Simple, straightforward. Precise in its ambitions.
Was it narrow-minded? Perhaps... maybe even ignorant. But a sword ultimately only needs to do one thing, anyway.
- Shopping List:
Weapon: A heavy broadsword of steel (or stronger)

- Response to Vince:
- Rosemary doesn't seem particularly put at ease by Vince's statements. "I've been asking the other travelers around here, and none of them have heard of Castle High either. Vince, I saw everyone when they were first pulled up: no one remembers how they got here. At all. Not even me or the other commanders." She seems to hesitate a moment, but can't hold it back anymore, "Please don't tell the other commanders I'm telling you this, alright? But... when we all first woke up, the only thing we knew about Castle High was that story I told you: that it split from Castle Low long ago, and has been protecting the country from future threats ever since. But there were no soldiers, no commanders... the only person in the entire castle was that terrifying man, locked away in the basement long ago." She sighs, putting a hand to her head, "I don't understand why this is all happening. I'm the only one among the commanders who can clearly remember life before the castle, and I never heard of Castle High. Yet here it is, full of ancient magic... where has it been?"
She seems finally out of words and breathes out a hard sigh, her head drooping. "I... I'd hoped that maybe it was just me... but it really seems like the world's forgotten this castle, just as we've forgotten how we got to it. I just... I was just hoping, I suppose."
A dry, mirthless smile crosses her face as she looks back at Vince, "I wish I knew how to just relax and have fun like you. Ever since I became the Medical Commander, every moment I don't spend healing or taking care of someone feels selfish. Like I think something as silly as eating a nice, slow meal is worth letting a dozen other people feel more agony. I even feel guilty right now for having come into town: I told myself it was to ask others and get more information, but voices in my head say that's just an excuse to get out of the castle. I guess I should be getting back, actually..."
- Response to Severa:
- The shopkeeper puts a hand to her chin in thought as she peers at Severa once more, a wry smile, "I thought there was something interesting about you. Hmm..."
She tilts her head, looking at the bag, before placing her hand over Severa's, taking hold of the coin purse. "I'll take these off your hands if you don't need them, I suppose..." she tosses the bag in the air and her hat opens its stitched mouth, sucking the purse into it with a jingle. The shopkeeper looks back at Severa with a wink, and at that moment, Severa might realize a small shape had been placed in her hand. "But I'm not one to upcharge, so let's say the rest of those coins bought you that!"
The shape is a cermaic pyramid with one of its tips tinted red. No matter how Severa moves the pyramid, it continues to point toward the witch. "A simple little enchantment, but one-of-a-kind: you'll be able to find me no matter where that castle of yours goes! I'm a bit busy these days but hoooow about, whenever your business in the castle is over, you let me treat you to a magical dinner and some sharing of stories, hm? Oh, and the name's Marie, darling." Marie gives a wink and a light laugh, "now, only charging 11,000 coins for that is real generosity." Before Severa can respond, Marie spins one of her fingers in a circle while waving, and Severa is carried on a gentle wind current out the door, her robe and conduit in hand.
- Response to Bran:
- Marie chuckled, appearing behind Bran in much the same way she had behind Severa earlier. "No worries dear; specialty is my specialty!" She chuckles, bobbing between her shelves of potions and seemingly-mundane objects. "Hmm... magical paper, you say? I must say, that is quite a rare request... ah, I know!" She claps her hands twice, and her large hat begins to droop, its face almost sickly. Heaving a few times, the hat's stitched mouth opens, hurling out a giant book. Despite its size, Marie effortlessly catches and spins with the tome, "Here it is! Old Gerindale's Tome of Tales! Now there must be something in here that will work..."
She holds the book by the spine and gives it a few taps, followed by a harsh smack -- instantly, each and every page falls out of the bindings, becoming a colossal mess of papers strewn out across the shop floor. Entirely unfazed, Marie tosses the empty book cover aside, bending down to flip over a few pages. "Let's see here... Borinberry, no... Wyvern's blood, no quite... oh!" she picks up a piece of paper with excitement... then stores it away in her pocket, flashing Bran a smile, "that was a great recipe for cheesecake! Ah, but your paper..." she flips over a few more sheets, before finally finding whatever she was looking for. With a nod, she clutches a page in her hands as she clicks her heels together, and all the other pages suddenly lift themselves off the ground! They form a tornado of paper, spiraling back into the book cover... and a few seconds later, the mayhem has ended, and the book is restored to its previous size, which she scoops up with her free hand and throws onto one of the shelves.
She comes over to Bran and holds out the paper, grabbing one of its edges and unfolding it, then unfolding it again, then again, until the one sheet has suddenly unfolded into a small stack in her hands. "This should do nicely: Chill-Embedded Paper! Cold to the touch! Once, a tale of a frigid king was written onto these pages, a tale of how he built his kingdom using the frozen blood of his own people, before it grew so cold, his own heart stopped. Over the years, even the ink that wrote the story turned to ice and broke away, leaving just these icy pages. Chilling stuff!" she winks at the pun. "Here you go dear -- free of charge! I'm not sure you know someone named Severa up in that castle of yours, but she was already quite generous in her pay earlier, so consider it a gift from her!" She looks up for a moment, then says in a whisper, "besides, my hat gets very jealous when I get a lot of money, so I really can't afford to accept any more." She raises her voice again, "now off you go! Good luck in your adventures! Write down any particularly good stories, alright? It might make for even better paper!"
When Bran reaches the counter of Old Man Anton's a few minutes later, the titular Anton looks up from his large chair and blinks at the mage, setting aside the book he'd been reading. He squints his eyes at the item in his hands. "Those're... readin' glasses? You're young, what'in' youse be needin' those for?" he smiles a toothy grin at his own joke, revealing a few missing teeth. With a slow movement, he picks himself up off his chair and saunters over toward an ancient register, working a few levers to run its calculations. "Now lesse... eehh, you can have them's for uhh.. howsa 112 gold, hm? They are prescription... I think, at least. Can't quite remember when I got those, really." He shrugs, "reckin' them's at least got good glass though, donnit?"
- Response to Arthur:
- "Just a moment!" comes a young, male voice in response to Arthur from the back porch of the shop, where the sound of hammer striking metal comes to a stop. A few seconds later, a dark-skinned boy, no older than 19, emerges, toweling off the sweat and soot on his arms and face. His shirt is short, revealing his midriff, and his pants appear to have been cut into shorts with a rough blade. "Sorry to keep you waiting! We don't get too many people buying things at the counter these days. Most people just order their--"
"Lamiiiiil, who's that!? Someone try to come early for their order again!? Tell them to leave!" yells a gruff voice from the porch.
"Just a customer, Master Veela! I've got it!" Lamil responds, yelling back. He looks back at Arthur, not missing a beat. "Anyway, were you interested in buying a blade?" He notices where Arthur is looking with a nod, "Aaah, yes, the swords in that display are some of my Master's finest work! Each of them was created with a different celestial inspiration -- the Comet's Tail moves through the air as quick as a streaking comet, while the Sun's Light over there is--"
"Lamil, how many times must I tell you: swords sell themselves!" From the back porch emerges an old woman in a wheelchair, a tiny pair of glasses balancing precariously on her nose that she looks at the two men through. Like Lamil, she too is covered in soot and sweat, though she seems in no hurry to wipe it away. Her clothing is much more modest than her apprentice's, a plain long sleeve blouse tied at the sleeves and a pair of jeans covering her unmoving legs. As she gets closer, it appears one of her arms is entirely missing, though the one that remains would be muscular even on a young person, let alone someone her age. "You talk about weapons like you talk about snake oil, and that's what people will think you're selling."
"Yes master," Lamil agrees with a solemn nod, as if this is a lesson he's been told many times before.
"Hmph. Now let me see who this is..." Veela wheels herself closer to Arthur, inspecting him. Her eyes scan him up and down, focusing for brief moments on his hands, his feet, his chest, and his eyes. Finally, she takes off her glasses and polishes them, as she says in a gruff tone, "are you a mercenary, or something else? Display blades like those aren't the kind mercenaries like. They like the swords that end lives quickly. Hard metal and sharp blades, no frills." She puts back on the glasses, her eyes now peering deep into his, "is a mercenary's sword the kind you came here for? Or something else?"

Arthur regarded Lamil with a polite nod as he entered, stepping aside to let him talk about the various blades on display. He did his best to repress the smirk about to crop up on the edge of his features as the young man wove some sort of tale about the lighter blade he'd been examining... a touch too enthusiastic- and very clearly new to the forge; what in the world was he wearing?- but he knew that bright energy well.
As Veela arrived, though, he lifted his head, examining her thoroughly in turn. Was she covered in soot? Only one arm? A strong one, though... hm. He had to wonder what sort of accomodations that old woman would have to make to work in the shop... if she did at all- which, it seemed so. Instinctively, he straightened his back a little.
"Ah... I was just looking." He waved a hand in front of the Comet's Tail, "I admire this sort of... mm, modest-- graceful craftsmanship. Not my style, but I knew a very talented young man with an eye for making display pieces like these where I used to live... ahah. Fiaba, little town at the bottom of the mountain a couple days south of here... maybe you've heard of him."
For a moment, the swordsman's gaze drifted towards the window- a shadow of... something, momentarily dimming his energy. He continued quickly, crossing his arms.
"-but I am a mercenary, yes. Just looking for a sturdier weapon while I'm here. Steel broadsword, about eighty one centimetres on the blade. Preferrably somewhere between one and a half and two kilograms... No need for anything fancy." He flashed a quick smile, the fingers of his left hand drumming restlessly on his arm. "You got anything for me?"

((Blugh sorry if we care to RP this later I'm thinking Erika found her way into a magical music shop))
I'd like a guitar form that's a little sturdier/stronger than the blank one (like +1 power or something?) that she could "copy the shape of", sticking with the 'I can create instruments' thing.
And then maybe something to enhance her lightning abilities
And maybe a training thing to aim more toward rock goddess buffing stuff.

- A restless week:
Truthfully, Arthur found himself wholly unable to settle down for the duration of Castle High's stay at Vernia-- and restless, as if he were being chased by something, he moved back and forth between the castle and all the interesting things he could find around town: one day, he would be found wrestling a line of challengers at Ralio's; another day, flirting with someone (man or woman, it was difficult to predict) at the bar or regaling a small party with a story- though never remaining there for any longer than two hours; less often, slipping into the library in the early mornings and trying to crack open a book while no-one was looking before getting frustrated and leaving.
He even took the bus back to Castle High a few times to have a look at the smithy... Overall, he assessed it to be perfectly serviceable- though he was glad to have his own tools, given the general wear he could notice on their equipment. About midway through the week, he stopped staying in town for the night entirely; and those who might have passed through the castle smithy might also have noticed him working tirelessly through the night-- almost as if posssessed. He worked diligently, gracefully, minding the people around him but never taking his eyes off of his work for longer than a minute from the time he entered to the time he left for bed... a solemn quiet hanging over him through it all.
In the early morning, rinse and repeat. Throw in an afternoon nap now and then-- sleeping in a tree outside of town or spending some time at the inn to rest his back on a bed that didn't feel like a rock, for the better part of three to even six or seven hours.
He had his doubts about whether it mattered that the components or process of making this blade were 'sacred' at all-- he'd certainly witnessed enough 'divine' interventions to at least acknowledge the existence of spirits and their sometimes temperamental ways... but Saul wasn't going to last long out there without a weapon. If that man would rather use the broken remains of his sword than pick up something even vaguely functional, they'd have to make do for the time being...

Rosemary seemed unable to help but smile at Vince's exuberant clap and smile. "A lake? I guess it's been a while since I've visited one... but I really should--"
She cut herself off with a sigh, putting a hand to her head before looking back up at Vince. "Well... I suppose giving myself some time to relax will mean I'll do better when I go back to work. Or something." She began walking toward the door, as if trying to move before she'd change her mind. "Alright, yes-- oh, um, but only if you actually want to go. No need to go just for me or anything! But if it's something you think will be fun, well..." she motioned for the door with a slightly more relaxed smile, "lead the way."

- Response to Arthur:
- The blacksmith raises an eyebrow, "'Modest?' If you wish to call it junk, just say it is, right?" The way she speaks makes it hard to tell if that was as a joke or not. "Fiaba? Haven't been there in twenty-seven... no, twenty-nine years," she nods confidently.
"Oh, I think I've seen that shop, yeah!" Lamil chirps. "My big brother and I used to visit Fiaba for our delivery routes. Huh, maybe I sub-consciously drew inspiration from it for our shop..."
Veela leans over and gives the boy a light slap on the wrist, "You need to spend less time being so sub-conscious, maybe then you'd remember to keep the forge hot, hmm?" She immediately continues, sizing up Arthur, drinking in every detail of his posture and motion, from his gaze out the window to his restless fingers. "...Hm. Can't quite tell if you're running away from something, or running toward it." She pushes her wheelchair toward the back porch, still talking. "Most people are doing one or the other, hmm? Running away from people, memories, fears. Running toward people, promises, hopes. Almost the same thing. But one's living with eyes-forward, the other looking back."
She disappears onto the back porch, and Lamil awkwardly tries to avoid Arthur's gaze.
The forge master returns a handful of seconds later, a sword balanced in her lap. "No business of mine, of course. Blacksmiths don't ask questions: someone pays me, I give them a weapon, simple as that. Nice to have simple things like that in life."
Lamil frowns at that comment, which his master immediately notices. "Hmm? Have something to say?"
"Well, I mean... you don't really mean that, do you master? If someone came in to buy a weapon that you knew would do something bad with it, you wouldn't sell to them, right?"
The old woman gives a dry laugh, "and how would I know that? Read their mind? Silly boy. Appearances and words mean nothing. I wouldn't have much business if I made everyone I sell to promise not to kill anyone, now would I?" She gives another cackle, leaving Lamil looking embarrassed once more. She seems to relent slightly, "it's not your fault, Lamil. The curse of the young, to have such innocent thoughts. One day, you'll learn there's more important parts to someone than who they decide to stick their sword into."
She looks back over at Arthur, "Baah, forgive my rambling. Trying to teach the boy before I die. Needs to learn to pay attention and think more, he's too busy thinking about boys and games. Now then, here's your sword," she lifts it up, rotating it around several times for Arthur to see and allowing him to hold it if he wished. "Eighty one point two centimeter blade, one and three-fourths kilograms. It still needs more design on the hilt, but if you don't care about that, it's yours. Luster steel, very good stuff. Lets me make the blade just right. Should put any other to shame." When he was done inspecting, she hands the sword over to Lamil, who quickly runs to get it wrapped. Veela begins sticking up her fingers, counting, "Now, for materials, labor, not putting in an order, minus that its unfinished work... mmm, 2,000 gold sounds reasonable, yes?"
- Response to Vince:
- Rosemary quietly followed Vince along, seeming to relax a fraction now that they were out and moving. She seemed a bit surprised by his question, "Oh, you want to know about my magic? It's a bit of a long story... you see, my mother taught me to use medical magic ever since I could read. She was a very accomplished cleric -- people from places weeks away would send for her to heal those with injuries or diseases no one else had the expertise to cure. It meant she was gone from home for long periods, but she would leave me volumes of books to read and test me on when she got back on anatomy, mana conversion, things like that..." she gave a little sigh, her eyes darting off into the memory.
She then perked up a bit more as she continued, "oh, but to actually answer your question, yes, I do know a bit of other magic. The books mother gave me would have footnotes to other texts about things I thought were more exciting, like transmutation and alchemy," a sly smile crossed her face. "Synthesizing tissue and blood is an essential skill, but I uh, may have played with things like turning water into soda, or veggies into candy," she laughed, a sillier sound than one might expect, quickly rising and falling tones. "They always tasted terrible, but I tried my best to pretend they were great! Once, I brought them for Russel and our friends to try, right? And I told them my father had gotten some extra money and bought it for them. So, like children do, they stuffed their faces..." she waited a moment, letting the suspense hold, then continued, "and immediately spit it all over the grass, hahaha! They called me names for the rest of the day, but I was too pleased with myself to care. Never really pursued transmutation once I got older, but I think the topic's really interesting."
"Snacks? What exactly are we up to?" She questioned. "Is this going to take too long, Vince? Even with my team there, I really shouldn't be away too long... still, I suppose it's good to not end up hungry... I could go for some lamb, I suppose. Maybe as a sandwich? Oh, on fresh bread."
